Absolutely everything you need to know about creating or updating a home office
When I recently got interested in home offices, I started looking around for good discussions of the topic. I was surprised to discover that while a few recent home decoration books had chapters devoted to home offices, their focus was principally aesthetics not mechanics. I found that while several handbooks had been published, they tended to be confined to the 1980″s and as such were technologically outmoded, especially given the recent explosion of interest in home offices. Before I despaired too much, one day mother Amazon sent me a note about this book (published this year) and bingo my problems were solved. While quite inexpensive, this book is printed on the finest paper; the illustrations are full color and large in size. The author employs a technique whereby he uses the pictures to illustrate what he is talking about–this is quite effective. A look at the Table of Contents easily reveals that the book’s coverage of topics is comprehensive, yet the book only runs 125 pages since the author is concise in his verbiage. The individual topics are well covered; but it does not take all day to read the text. The author also discusses how to upgrade a home office, as well as the benefits of putting a prefab shed in the backyard and using it. I hasten to mention for my fellow westerners (especially those from New Mexico) that a shed is not a casita, but can serve nicely as a compact and inexpensive home office.Among the topics covered are where to locate your home office; floor plan ideas; desk layouts; what furniture to select; and what technological options you have. The author is careful to discuss computer issues such as the right viewing angle, the best chair, how to make the best use of existing windows, and storage options for paper and digital material. He even includes a bit on safes and security options. I thought his discussion of how to design the best background for zoom conferences to be quite helpful. While primarily a “how to guy,” the author is not unmindful of how good aesthetics contribute to an effective working space. In addition, he also discusses some tax advantages to home office. So it is all here in one inexpensive but beautiful book, extremely well organized, with virtually every possible topic concisely discussed and illustrated. The book also is designed to help those who are redesigning their home office with some solid ideas. I can only say: man, this is THE book.

Please Give Us More Ideas
I love the home office ideas in this book. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because there were not enough ideas. I can use some of the suggestions but wish there was more info on how to use for different crafts or a combination of uses for the one office.

Setting up a home office – READ THIS BOOK!
Home Office Solutions by Chris Peterson is an essential book for anyone working from home these days. It is divided into three chapters. Chapter 1 focuses on choosing a location for a home office, and includes a variety of important issues to consider, such as how much space you need, traffic flow, if visitor space is necessary, the noise level of the area, where the technology dead zones and hot spots are, and even the visual impact the office will have on your home. This section also discusses the various options for home offices, from closets to attics, basements to outbuildings. Basically, the book has ideas for you if you have a room you can dedicate to your home office or if you have to use a corner of a bedroom, repurpose a closet, or even use space under the stairs.Chapter 2, which is the largest of the three chapters, focuses on setting up the home office. Peterson goes over how to plan your room and your desk layout, furniture options, technology, lighting, colors and patterns, and even discusses how to personalize your home office.Chapter 3 covers better ways to work from home. Peterson discusses video meetings, which have become a staple these days, focusing on issues such as lighting, sound, picture quality, and background clutter. He also has a section on tax advantages of working at home and even includes a list of useful apps and programs. The book also includes other useful bits of information, such as reviewing the case against using the same computer for home and work, options for soundproofing, how to build a DIY floating desk, features to look for in a quality office chair, and many other gems. Finally, the book is filled with lovely full-color photos that would make anyone want to have a home office – even the offices under the stairs or in a closet look amazing!I think this book is most useful for someone setting up a home office. Since I already have such a setup, I found Chapter 3 to be the most useful. But really, this book covers everything you need to know about creating a home office and working from home on a daily basis. Thanks to NetGalley for a free copy of this book.

The book is written for the amateur with little design knowledge. It’s more of a book of ideas with useful tips than a design manual.I was hoping it was going to be the latter so was slightly disappointed, however I did pick up a couple of ideas from reading it.
